| www.themailandgardian.com A hero and an inspiration to so many kids and aspiring paraplegic athletes around the world, who couldn't get enough of his inspirational back story. He was the most in-demand sports personality for marketers who wanted to put his athletic success and boyish good looks to use. Pistorius received a lot of media attention and endorsments from multiple brands following his success in athletics and putting South Africa on the map after his success at the olympics. Pistorius was estimated to receive endorsments worth more than R14m a year. His sponsorships with Nike received the most attention, following a series of other sportsmen backed by Nike. His endorsements stretched beyond footwear giant, taking in British telecoms firm BT, sunglasses maker Oakley and french designer Thierry Mugler to name just a few. Following his murder case of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp who shot to fame as a model when she was named the first face of cosmetics giant Avon South Africa would have turned 30 years on Monday 19 August when had to appear in court. Soon after his first court apperance many advertisers and sponsors were skeotikal about their relationship with the athlete and did not want their brands associated with Pistorius. Oscars's agent reported that the sponsorships were safe and that nothing had changed. Recent reports say otherwise, it is now being reported that Oakley has cancelled its contract with Pistorius along with Nike "no further plans" to use him in their advertisements. This is not a good look for Oscar at all, his credibility as a brand and as an athlete is lost and has lost of his fan base. Even if he would be found not guilty by the court many brands would still be skeptikal to align themselves with the athlete bacause of credibility. Oscar is said to be back in court next year on the 3 March! www.enca.com/coverageoscar-pistorius- case |

It is trully sad on what has happened to Pistorius, he really was a hero of many(abled or not). everyone does need a hero and to their hero fall is unfortunate, yet it is a learning curve as we can learn from his mistakes. Great article Busi, keep it up. ;-)
ReplyDeleteits a pity for oscar pistorius because he has lost all everything he has worked for as a brand himself,i think that as time goes on people will forget and maybe sponsorships might come back an sponsor him
ReplyDeletePoor Pistorius. He will get up again one day and yes we all learn from our mistakes
ReplyDeletefrom hero to zero, it is sad what has happen to him but there is a say that say you must lie to the bed that you made so i guess this is that bed that he made.no person will shot more than three saying he was pretecting himself that is impossible. as a woman i dont feel sorry for him because he bought this to himself.
ReplyDeleteSad indeed, but i truly think that our judiciary system is also trying to prove a point that no matter who you are justice should be served
ReplyDeleteI really hope justice will be served for the sake of Reeva's family, even if Oscar doesnt get life in prison but a fair judgemen that will satisfy evryone involve in this situation.
ReplyDeleteBad things come to everyone, it's life. A Hero he WAS i say
ReplyDeleteIf Pistorious is guilty he got what he deserves and in the mean time, it is only fair that sponsors pull out. That type of association will damage their image!Brand image is very important, one scandal and its down the drain...takes hard work and years to build an image. To ruin it with a murder suspect..now that would be stupidity!
ReplyDeleteUtter stupidity!!!
